Kiss and Tell ...... I recently woke up to the "Lipstick Lead" buzz on the news. Before this I thought of a smidge of lipstick as being a simple little indulgence. I guess it is simple no more! The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said one-third of the 33 red lipsticks examined by an independent lab contained a level of lead exceeding the FDA's limit for lead in candy. This is a bit concerning when you think about the fact that lipstick doesn’t stay just on the lips; the ingredients can also get into the mouth and into the bloodstream. The FDA does not set a limit for lead in lipstick. They say they have not set a safe level because they didn’t think it was a problem…but in light of recent findings, the FDA says it will take another look. The trade association representing the cosmetic industry acknowledged "negligible" levels of lead in some lipsticks but said it is not intentionally added. I personally feel no better knowing they do not intentionally add lead. So what are my intentions? I personally am glad that I have been leaning toward more natural cosmetic products, so I will have no "red removal remorse" in my make-up bag. I’ll be reminding my friends in red that they have gorgeous lips under their lipstick, and why leave stains on their coffee cups and boyfriends? With friends that are pregnant I’ll be a little more pushy since they have to be particularly careful of many different kinds of exposures. For those who wish to purge the particulars, the list below are the top brands testing positive for lead according to The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics : L'Oreal Colour Riche "True Red" 0.65ppm L'Oreal Colour Riche "Classic Wine" 0.58 ppm Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor "Maximum Red" 0.56ppm Dior Addict "Positive Red" 0.21 ppm |
